What "Free to Download" AI Really Means for a Small Business

On October 15, Meta shared a new AI called Muse Spark Open. Developers can download it and run it themselves. That sounds like free AI for everyone. The real story is a bit more careful than that.

What came out

Muse Spark Open is a very large AI model. It takes in text, pictures, video and sound, and it answers in text. Meta says it is built for coding and long, multi-step jobs, and it can keep a very long chat in mind at once.

Meta calls it the most capable open model from a US company so far. That is Meta's own claim.

"Free" does not mean "no rules"

You can download it, but it comes with Meta's own license. That license has limits on business use. It is not one of the standard open licenses people know.

So before a business builds on it, someone needs to read the license and make sure the plan fits.

It is also very big

Meta says it needs two top-end Mac Studio computers, or a lot of server power. Most small businesses will not run it on their own. Many hosting services already offer it, and so do some cloud platforms. Meta does not publish prices.

What Meta says about safety

Meta says the model passed its own safety checks and has promised a full report soon. Until that report is out, treat the safety claim as Meta's word only.

What this means for you

A free AI is not always free for a business. If your developer wants to use it, ask for:

  • the license in writing
  • who pays for the computers that run it
  • where your customers' information will be kept

If you only use AI through ordinary apps, nothing changes for you today. This is mostly news for the people who build the tools.

Many developers can use it for free, but the license has limits for business use. Ask your developer to read it first.

Do I need special computers to use it?

The full model is very large. Meta says it needs two top-end Mac Studio computers or a lot of server power. Many hosting services already offer it, so you may not need to run it yourself.
